Cohab

Cohab is an association founded in 2019 with the aim of promoting urban biodiversity by developing solutions to coexist with small wildlife: birds and small mammals.

We have 3 areas of activity:

1. Passages for small fauna: we work on restoring corridors within the framework of Green and Blue Grids. We develop passages for small terrestrial fauna in fences, with the Hedgehog as the flagship species, and passages for arboreal fauna in trees, especially for Red Squirrels.

2. Nesting boxes: specifically, nesting boxes that help restore habitats for cavity-dwelling and crack-dwelling fauna associated with buildings. Urban wildlife faces two major challenges in cities:

Urbanization: changes in architecture with buildings becoming smooth, cubic, and airtight, in which wildlife no longer has cavities to shelter or nest.

Climate change: to ensure successful nesting, wildlife needs a stable temperature in cavities. Rising temperatures, sudden changes, and increasingly early heatwaves during the nesting season impact nesting success.

The range of nesting boxes we develop addresses these two issues. Our goal is to offer nesting boxes that meet the species' needs and ensure successful nesting.

3. Awareness and training: which we consider essential because for cohabitation to be successful, it must be desired. The best way to protect biodiversity is to learn about it, and it is in this context that we carry out mediation actions.

Project Description: Installation of a Squirrel Bridge

The squirrel bridge is an aerial bridge that allows arboreal wildlife to safely cross over roads. Generally, it is installed over roads identified as deadly, where Red Squirrels are often crushed. At Cohab, it’s an elastic stretched between two trees more than 7 meters high. It has been studied and designed to allow squirrels to cross easily, not hinder the development and movements of the supporting trees, and guarantee the safety of road users.
