About the action

Murmures des Océans is an association whose aim is to inspire wonder in order to better raise public awareness about the future of marine mammals by merging art and science in the service of education.

Murmures des Océans embarked on a one-year maritime expedition aboard a sailboat named Agnès Blue, specially provided, to trace the migratory route of North Atlantic humpback whales.

During this expedition, the team collaborated with various artists and scientific and local experts, who documented and captured images and sounds of the oceans and marine mammals to create diverse works and content, merging art and science in the service of education. Following this expedition, Murmures des Océans will create an exhibition to introduce the public to the mysterious world of humpback whales during their long migratory journey.

The financial aid provided by Ecomail & Ecomtel is used for the purchase of a hydrophone that records the sounds of the ocean depths and marine mammals, to introduce the general public to the true sounds of the oceans. The hydrophone is essential as it also helps localize cetaceans. Sound travels four times faster than in air and much farther. Thus, we can locate a pod of dolphins or a whale kilometers away from the sailboat.

The sponsor of our association is Olivier ADAM, a Bioacoustician and Professor at Sorbonne University/CRNS, specializing since 2001 in cetacean acoustics.
He joined the sailboat in the Dominican Republic, where we conducted an incredible recording of a male humpback whale's song. Acoustics play a significant role in this expedition. Murmures des Océans will broadcast to the public the true sounds of the oceans, from whale songs to the noise of cargo ships, the clicking of sperm whales, and fishing nets.
The noises, the sounds of the oceans are not intuitive. The fact that whales sing or coral emits sounds is unknown to the general public. It is necessary to inform, to reveal, and to amaze the public to better raise their awareness of the reality of today’s oceans.
